Reading- how can I help my child?

READING IS THE PASSPORT TO ALL OTHER LEARNING!

This page is designed to support you as parents and carers with your child's journey to becoming a strong reader.

To help support and enhance our teaching of phonics in school, Newington Green has signed up to a new systematic, synthetic phonics (SSP) programme. From spring 2022, we will be following the DfE validated Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) scheme, which was developed by the Knowledge Schools Trust and is based on our previous phonics scheme: Letters and Sounds. The programme is designed to ensure that all children learn to read well and make speedy progress. It provides a simple routine and consistent approach to phonics teaching, which helps to reduce pupils' cognitive load and maximise their chances of success. We have made this decision based on extensive research and careful consideration of the needs of all our readers.

There are regular workshops for parents, so please look out for these in our school newsletter.

Below you will find helpful guides and videos that will support you, in helping your child to read.

How do we prioritise reading to make sure that all pupils read well, widely and confidently, so they can access learning for themselves?

*The design of our curriculum is driven by high quality texts, taking into account the equalities focus of our curriculum

*We have a librarian that works with all classes to support their love of books and the books children might choose to expand their horizons

*Our children receive a yearly gift of a book at the end of Autumn term

*We have matched all reading books for take home readers in R, Y1, Y2 and Autumn Y3 to our ELS programme, with the support of Oxford University Press

*Every class has a lovely book/reading area

*We take part in the the Islington Summer Reading Challenge

*Our teachers read to us at least 3 times a week, and talk to us about book choices

*We have playground book boxes!

*Pupils in R, Y1 and Y2 visit Mildmay Library

*We have an in school reading challenge- read 10 books and you receive a reading prize from our English Leader

*Our staff have ALL received training on ELS, our phonics programme, and teachers have received training on story-time, book choices and reading for pleasure.
